My Time in the UK

I’m Yohani and I’m Srilankan-French. Here is my story about my internship and experience in Manchester, UK.

The UK is the country I dreamt of visiting since I was a small child, I had a lovely picture in my mind about the places, the culture, people etc.

One evening, whilst I was at my home in Paris, I received a random email that said that there would be opportunities for students and job seekers to do an internship in the UK which will help participants to improve their English skills and to also have a professional working experience. So, I immediately applied for it and soon enough I was invited to an interview… and then another! After two interviews, I was one of the lucky ones who got accepted and was given the opportunity to come to the UK, to improve my professional working experience as well as improve my academic English skills.

I was really excited and nervous, because this was my first time to travel abroad alone but I was also really happy because I had the chance to fulfil my childhood dream. I flew to Manchester on 7th January 2019 for 3 months. The association who arranged my internship were great and they helped me to settle in and made me feel at home.

I had the opportunity to intern at UKEC Academy, and I started work on 8th January, the day after my arrival. I was very nervous, but after several days I felt more relaxed. This was because of my new colleagues welcoming me and making me feel part of the team right away and the students were very friendly too. They really helped me to settle in! It’s been 4 months since I started working at UKEC Academy (because I extended my stay for an extra month as I was enjoying it so much!) and each day I woke up really happy. I couldn’t wait to get to work because I really loved the place and what I was doing. As well as working as an intern, I occasionally attended the UKEC C1 classes and it’s really helped me to brush up on my English and my academic language skills. The teachers are highly professional and very friendly. Within this short period of time, I’ve achieved so much and gained so many new skills thanks to the staff and teachers. What I really admire about my classes is how diverse the students are. The students come from all over the world, and it’s really helped me to understand different cultures, language, and make new friends.

I really like Manchester and I’m so glad that I had this opportunity to work here.  It’s a really beautiful and friendly city. I’ve met so many friends since being here. I’ve shared some of the best experiences in Manchester and spent most of my time with my new friends. It’s unforgettable, I feel so lucky and honoured. Even though it was only for a short period of time, I have really felt at home.

The time has finally come to say goodbye to this wonderful country and to UKEC Academy. I have had the most unforgettable and greatest time in my life here in Manchester. The things that I’ve achieved, the experience I’ve gained, the things that I’ve learnt have really helped me to change my life. I really feel that these experiences have helped me to grow in confidence. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our principal Danny Layzell, for giving me this life rewarding experience. I also want to thank all of my colleagues for helping me and encouraging me to achieve everything I have so far in this internship.

I will soon return to my home in France, and I will continue working at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris as a Customer Care Officer. I really believe the experience I’ve gained in the UK and my internship will really help me to be successful in my future career.

I will finish by saying to everyone, always follow your dream, work hard until you have it. Accepting new challenges and believing in myself have helped me to succeed so far. Thank you.
