Manchester is one of the biggest cities in the UK. It has a large multi-cultural population, several universities and two very famous football clubs. Compared to London, Manchester is smaller and much less expensive but still bursting with history, culture and night life.
Oxford Road is known as Manchester’s “cultural corridor”. It’s home to museums, galleries, live music venues and theatres, and leads onto the famous “curry mile”. In the Northern Quarter you’ll find old industrial buildings that have been converted into vintage boutiques and trendy cafes. You can also visit Manchester’s modern shopping centres, enjoy the city’s excellent sporting facilities, or just relax by the canal in historic Castlefield. There is lots to explore and always something different to do.
Because Manchester is a university city, it’s also a great option if you’re thinking of pursuing higher education in the UK. There are around 85,000 students studying here, lots of them living in Fallowfield, a vibrant student village close to the city centre.
And if you want to venture out of the city, Manchester is very well-connected. London is just two hours away on the train with tickets for as little as £12.50. We’re also close to the Lake District National Park (an area of outstanding natural beauty and dramatic landscapes), the historic city of Chester (with lots of medieval buildings), Liverpool (home of The Beatles) and the pretty spa town of Buxton.
To maximise your opportunity to practise English outside of the classroom, we offer a range of social activities throughout the year and help to arrange volunteering opportunities. You can view our interactive map of Manchester to see what the city has to offer and you can check our events calendar to see where we’re planning to visit next.
